Runton Road Car Park in Cromer closes to prevent damage

Visitors have been met by a metal barrier blocking access to the Runton Road Car Park in Cromer. 

A sign attached to the barrier by North Norfolk District Council states: "This car park will now be closed from Monday to Friday (open at the weekends) until March 25 to prevent anti-social behaviour and surface damage."

The sign placed by North Norfolk District Council (Image: Contributed)The car park, which overlooks the sea and Cromer Esplanade, is listed as having 1,037 spaces and costs £1.80 an hour.

A spokeswoman for the council said: “With the exceptionally wet period of weather we have seen over the past five months, parts of the grassed areas of the Runton Road Car Park have become very wet and have been the subject of some damage through misuse by vehicles of an evening.

"To protect this area for the busy summer season, and recognising that there will be reduced spaces on the car park this summer because of accommodating the Balfour Beatty construction compound required to deliver the £25 million Cromer and Mundesley Coastal Management Scheme works, the council has closed the grassed area of the car park for use during the week."

The council said "ample public parking spaces" are available on the surfaced area of Runton Road, Cadogan Road and The Meadow Car Parks. 

It is aiming to open the grassed area of the car park from March 23 for the Easter holiday period.
