Rroadworks which have been causing delays and congestion have been slammed as a "waste of taxpayers' money".

The £4m project in Dereham Road, Costessey - as part of Norfolk County Council's Transforming Cities Fund - began in September and is being carried out in phases until July.

The delays and issues with the roadworks in the area - which the county council hopes will provide "high levels of walking and cycling" - are causing commuters to reach the end of their tether.

Ian Davidson, who lives in Costessey and travels into the city via Dereham Road, said the work being done is a "waste of taxpayers' money".

The 66-year-old said: "You wonder why it's even being done - it’s just ridiculous with the amount of money being wasted.

"You wouldn’t mind if the contractors just got on with the job but they seem to be given an endless amount of time to complete these works and even if it overruns they don’t get penalised for it.

"At the end of the day, it's just an inconvenience for motorists and I've even seen emergency services sitting there - lights flashing - unable to get through all the traffic.

"The city is so anti-motorist and while I cycle there’s no justification for putting in so many cycle lanes in when most still use the pavement - it's spending millions on unnecessary projects."

Costessey district and town councillor Gary Blundell said he was split on the scheme, arguing he could understand people's concerns but was also supportive of any initiatives to improve road safety.

He said: "I can see why the council are doing it and I hope that, once it is complete, the road will be safer for pedestrians and cyclists."
