An MP hopeful has urged health bosses to reconsider the closure of another "vital" pharmacy in the city.

Alice Macdonald, Labour's candidate for Norwich North at the next general election, has requested a meeting with the managing director of Boots UK after the high-street giant announced the closure of its branch in Aslake Close, Sprowston.

The pharmacy - which sits next to the East Norwich Medical Partnership surgery - will shut on March 16 as Boots moves to consolidate shops that are close to each other - reducing its 2,200 nationwide stores to 1,900.

The closure will see all prescriptions moved to Lawson Road Health Centre, with the closest Boots branches found in London Street and Aylsham Road.

In a letter penned to Boots UK managing director Sebastian James, Ms Macdonald and district councillors Natasha Harpley and Adrian Tipple said: "This follows the closure of the Boots Pharmacy in Norwich at Bluebell Road, and the announced closures of the Boots pharmacies at Anglia Square and, in Norwich North, at Magdalen Medical Practice in Lawson Road.

"Whilst we understand the pressures facing the pharmacy sector - not least because of cuts by the Conservative government - this will put increasing pressure on other local pharmacies which already have high demand.

"Aslake Close provides a vital service to many local residents, including those who may be unable to access services online or who will struggle to travel to other pharmacies. It is also situated next to a GP surgery making it easy for patients to collect prescriptions."

The group have requested a meeting with Mr James to clarify the rationale for this decision, what assessment was made of the impact on the local area and what support will be given to both current patients and staff at the pharmacy.

The letter finished: "We would of course, even at this stage, urge you to reconsider this decision."
