Authorities believed it to be a UXB (unexploded ordnance bomb), a device that has been primed, fused, armed or prepared for use in an armed conflict, but failed to detonate.

Teams from the army bomb disposal unit in Colchester arrived at the scene around 1.15pm.

Crews examined the object and conducted several tests before confirming it was harmless.

The cordons were taken down and the beach reopened just before 2pm today.
