A long-serving councillor who played a pivotal part in protecting Norfolk's coastline has died.

The death of Peter Moore, who served as a district and county councillor for North Walsham for nearly two decades, was announced at a North Norfolk District Council meeting this week.

Chairwoman Sarah Bütikofer paid tribute to the former North Walsham town mayor, describing him as a "vastly knowledgeable and experienced" councillor who was known for his "mischievous" sense of humour.

Before becoming an elected member, Mr Moore worked as an officer for the council, during which one of his "greatest achievements" was drawing up plans for the north Norfolk coast to be designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty - a move that helped protect the landscape for future generations.

In 2003, he became a councillor and served continually until May 2019, becoming chairman of NNDC, a cabinet member and chairman of committees during this time.

Addressing councillors on Wednesday, Ms Bütikofer said: "It is my sad duty to announce the death of Peter Moore.

"He was a passionate councillor who worked hard tackling many issues affecting families in North Walsham.

"He readily shared his vast knowledge and expertise with new members."

As well as his services to the council, he was an accomplished musician and trumpet player.

Later in life, he fell ill with dementia.

Members of North Norfolk District Council held a minute of silence at the meeting in memory of Mr Moore.

An NNDC spokeswoman added: "The thoughts of everyone at North Norfolk District Council are with our former colleague Peter’s family."

His funeral was held on Friday, February 22, at Felmingham Church.
