Plans have been lodged for two new shops in a unit formerly occupied by one of the city's longest-running stores.

An application has been submitted to Norwich City Council to transform the vacant Royal Arcade space that was previously home to Langleys toy shop.

Units 12-14 in the Royal Arcade, situated at the Gentleman's Walk entrance, have been empty since Langleys relocated to a smaller shop in 2021.

New plans would see the space divided into two units, with a new lobbied entrance, new kitchenettes and toilets, and separate access to the upper floors.

This would allow the first and second floors to be occupied independently of the ground floor units.

The application says there would be no impact on the external character of the Grade II listed building and that the division of the ground floor would see the unit restored to its "historical past", as it was originally home to two individual shops.

Langleys, which was opened in Norwich in 1883 in Prince of Wales Road by founder James Langley, is the Arcade's longest-standing tenant and has been based there since 1925.
