People across the city were left confused and scared after hearing 'explosions' late in the evening.

Police were called to Rouen Road at around 9.30pm on Thursday following reports of fireworks being set off in the area.

Officers carried out a thorough search at the scene but no suspects were identified.

The fireworks were heard "miles from the city centre" and left many baffled as to the cause of the disturbance.

A woman who lives in Hall Road said: "The noise woke me up, it was so loud - at one point I thought it could have been a gunshot."

Another woman shared on Facebook that she "thought it was fireworks at first but then wasn't so sure".

She added: "I'm a couple of miles from the city centre but heard it from here."
