Supermarket Lidl has yet to announce an opening date for one of its newest Norfolk stores but has won a wrangle about a 'tax' it has to pay as part of the development.

The German discount chain was granted permission for the new Harleston store in October 22, 2022, but bosses say they are still working through "final agreements" relating to the site, off Mendham Lane.

They said there are "no firm timescales" for when the store, which bosses had said would create up to 40 new jobs, will be opening.

There had been a wrangle over how much Lidl should pay South Norfolk Council in what is known as the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL).

That is a 'tax' on development which the council collects and then pools with Norwich City Council, Broadland District Council and Norfolk County Council to use on infrastructure projects, such as roads, schools and parks.

Lidl had argued the council was charging it hundreds of thousands of pounds too much in CIL, because part of the space it was seeking money for was a canopy area, rather than floorspace.

Lidl had said: "This results in the building falling within a different charging CIL category from that suggested by the council."

While the council had considered it was correct, it did end up issuing a revised CIL demand, for less money than initially requested.

Plans for the store, which had been unanimously supported by South Norfolk councillors, included 130 car parking spaces, including 11 electric vehicle charging points.

The store, due to open from 8am to 10pm Monday to Saturdays and from 10am to 4pm on Sundays, would include an in-store bakery.

Meanwhile, Lidl has now lodged further plans with the district council to install a number of illuminated signs, flagpoles, billboards and posters at the site.

The council will decide whether to grant permission for those in due course.
