A retired painter and decorator died after falling from a height near one of Norfolk's busiest junctions.

Michael Gardiner died in November underneath a flyover near the A47 Hardwick roundabout in King's Lynn.

An inquest opened into his death on Thursday at County Hall in Norwich.

During the short hearing, senior coroner for Norfolk Jacqueline Lake confirmed that Mr Gardiner was born in Gillingham, Kent, but lived in Downham Market.

The court heard he had died on November 24 last year at the age of 77.

Mrs Lake added that pathologist Laszlo Igali had given a medical cause of his death as traumatic injuries as a result of a fall from height.

The incident saw the A47 closed to traffic for more than three hours after Mr Gardiner was found with serious injuries and the East Anglian Air Ambulance called to his aid.

However, Mr Gardiner died at the scene.

Mrs Lake adjourned the hearing ahead of a full inquest, which will be held on Wednesday, April 3.
