A town's last remaining red telephone box has been vandalised.

The phone box, in North Walsham's Church Street, was found early on December 29 with smashed glass and police tape around it.

The news comes just days after the town's Christmas tree was stolen on December 23.

Locals took to social media to share their shock and disappointment.

Some feared the historic red box would have to be removed if it could not be replaced.

North Walsham's mayor, Bob Wright, said: "It's a shame there's another bad news story in North Walsham.

"Obviously it's sad to see the fabric of the town damaged in this way.

"The box is Grade II listed by Historic England so I'm sure it will be repaired."

A spokeswoman for Norfolk Police said: "Police were called to Church Street, North Walsham at midnight on Friday, December 29, 2023, following reports of a man smashing a telephone box.

"Officers attended the scene and a man aged in his 20s was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and possession of an offensive weapon.

"He was taken to Aylsham Police Investigation Centre for questioning.

"He has since been released on bail until February 2, 2024."
