It is important to remember that a dog is for life, not just for Christmas.

Here are five pooches looking for a forever home this festive season.

1. Dina

She finds strangers and other dogs a bit scary so would be well-suited to a rural, farm-type residence.

A representative for Dogs Trust said: "Dina will make a wonderful addition to a home looking for a bundle of fun."

2. Peanut

The Shar Pei will initially need company while he finds his feet and will need a secure garden to call his own.

Dogs Trust say that due to Peanut's previous history around strangers and other dogs, he will need to be kept on a lead and muzzled when out exploring.

He is a "worried boy" so would be well-suited to a quiet home environment without many visitors.

Fred has grade one heart disease and although he does not require any treatment for this currently, it will need monitoring by a vet as time goes on.

4. Frank

Although Frank would need to be the only dog in the home, he is learning to greet others politely while out on walks.

He is described by Dogs Trust as a "lovely, calm boy."

5. Freddy
