A widower who fell over near a Norfolk bus station and hit his head on the ground died two weeks later, a court has heard.

David Scott, 80, a retired painter and decorator, had been walking across the road at King’s Lynn bus station in the centre of town on November 21.

He was seen by witnesses falling and it was initially thought he may have had a heart attack.

After hitting his head on the ground, and sustaining a severe bleed to brain, he went into cardiac arrest.

He was taken to the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital (N&N) by air ambulance where he continued to deteriorate.

He died at the N&N two weeks later on December 4.

An inquest into his death took place earlier this month at Norfolk Coroner's Court, at County Hall in Norwich.

A statement from his nephew, Joe McCarthy, confirmed that Mr Scott had no previous heart problems but had been diagnosed with type two diabetes.

He also said that his wife had died last November, and he had lived independently since her passing with neighbours “looking out for him when needed”.

Summing up the evidence, area coroner Yvonne Blake said: “In falling to the ground, Mr Scott suffered a blow to the head causing a subdural hematoma.

“He had suffered an anoxic brain injury and did not respond to treatment.”

She concluded that he died as a result of an accident.

David Joseph Patrick Scott, of Plumtree Park in Marham, near Swaffham, was born on March 17, 1943, in London.
