A 29-year-old man from Norfolk has been banned from driving after crashing his Mercedes into a roundabout.

Police were called at 2.20am on November 5 to reports that a white Mercedes C220 had crashed into a roundabout in Fordham Road in Newmarket, at the junction with Studlands Park Avenue.

The driver had fled the scene, leaving the car wrecked in the road, and there was damage to a lamppost and a road sign.

Officers then searched the area and found Ryan Harrison who said he "had an accident".

He subsequently failed a roadside breath test, providing a sample of 64mg in 100ml of breath, and was arrested.

Harrison had a check-up at hospital before being taken to Bury St Edmunds police station where he then provided an evidential sample of 46mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath.

Harrison, of Feltwell Road in Downham Market, appeared at Ipswich Magistrates' Court on Friday where he pleaded guilty to a charge of driving with excess alcohol and was ordered to pay a total of £654 in fines, costs and victim surcharge.

He was also disqualified from driving for 14 months.

PC Georgia Goreham, who was one of the officers who attended the crash, said: “It was extremely fortunate that no one was seriously harmed as a result of Ryan Harrison’s reckless behaviour.

“There was considerable damage caused to his car and street furniture in the vicinity of the roundabout, which demonstrates how dangerous drink-driving is.

“As our current Christmas campaign states ‘there is no excuse for driving while under the influence and we will not tolerate people who take such unnecessary risks and endanger peoples’ lives'."
