A community leader has said roads in a west Suffolk town are "falling apart" as he has called for resurfacing work to be carried out on a main road after cars have sustained damaged.

Andy Neal, who represents Mildenhall Queensway on West Suffolk Council, has called for Suffolk Highways to step in and resurface Field Road in the town, which has potholes on either side of the carriageway.

Mr Neal said cars have been damaged in potholes around the town, some of which he claimed are very deep and are not prioritised for resurfacing.

"Field Road has had issues both sides of the road in front of St Marys School," he said.

"The roads in Mildenhall are falling apart and the potholes are very deep. Perhaps previous resurfacing was only a skim over rather than a thicker resurface.

"The main roads which see the most traffic obviously wear the most, but the estate roads fail to get the attention they deserve.

"Potholes on the main roads are causing damage to vehicles," he added.

A spokeswoman for Suffolk Highways said repairs will take place on the road as soon as possible.

She urged residents to report issues to the council so they can inspect them and, if needed, arrange repairs.

"Sections of Field Road, Mildenhall have been ordered for repairs and these will take place as soon as possible.

"We make repairs around the clock across our highway network in Suffolk.

"Defects which meet our intervention standards are picked up through our routine inspections, or when they’re reported to us via the Online Reporting Tool.

"We encourage residents to report any issues to us, so we can inspect these and repair if warranted."
