An inquest has opened into the death of a retired police officer, who was found dead in his home.

Robert Butler died a week ago, on Thursday, December 7 at the age of 55.

An inquest, which opened at Norfolk Coroner's Court, heard how Mr Butler had been found at his home in The Heywood, in Diss.

During a short hearing, area coroner Samantha Goward confirmed that Mr Butler had been born in Exeter and was a retired police officer.

His death comes as police unions continue to highlight fears over the impact the role has on the mental health of officers.

Andy Symonds, chairman of the Norfolk Police Federation, has recently called for improvements to welfare provision for the police - and for investigations to be held into the deaths of officers.

Mr Butler's medical cause of death was given to the court as hanging.
