A new deputy leader has been elected for the Labour group at Norfolk County Council after the previous post-holder quit to become an independent.

Mike Smith-Clare, who previously stood to be Great Yarmouth MP, will now succeed Emma Corlett as the deputy leader of the group.

Mr Smith-Clare, who represents Yarmouth Nelson and Southtown division, said: "So many people are struggling and there is so much we could do to help them make life better for themselves and future generations.

"We can help make a difference to their home life, economic security and getting the best for themselves and those close to them. It's a privilege to have the chance to make a difference."

The new appointment was needed after Ms Corlett was one of six Labour councillors to quit in the space of 24 hours, following a series of disagreements in the party.

Ms Corlett, who represents Town Close ward, and Maxine Webb, who represents Wensum ward, resigned from the county Labour group last month.

The resignations meant the county Labour group was reduced from 12 to 10, with the 11-strong Liberal Democrats taking over as the official opposition to the Conservative-led council.
