A prisoner faces having his jail sentence increased after admitting attacking two officers at HMP Wayland with an electrical cable and plug.

James Sanders, 26, left one officer requiring hospital treatment for serious hand injuries after swinging the cable as a weapon.

Another officer was also injured in the attack that happened after he had pretended to collapse in his cell.

Norwich Magistrates’ Court was told he had to be restrained and was placed in segregation following the incident in July 2022.

District Judge Andrew Johnson said he should be sentenced at Norwich Crown Court saying magistrate court powers were insufficient.

Sanders, who is now an inmate at HMP Five Wells in Northamptonshire, had been due to be released in November 2024.

In a separate case, a woman is accused of smuggling Buprenorphine, a medical treatment for people with heroin dependence, into HMP Wayland.

Laura Manners, 32, from Sandwich in Kent, will appear before Norwich Crown Court on January 4.

She was told sentencing guidelines meant the offence would “almost certainly lead to an immediate custodial sentence”.
