A beach in Norfolk has been named one of the seven best for a winter dog walk in England.

Holkham beach, near Wells, was included in the list by PDSA Vets and PDSA Pet Insurance.

The list also included Aysgarth Falls in the Yorkshire Dales, Cleeve Common in Gloucestershire, Godrevy in Cornwall, Devil’s Dyke in Brighton and Hamsterley Forest in Newcastle.

A spokesman for PDSA said: "Holkham beach is stunning no matter what time of year but beach walks in the winter are often less busy and more enjoyable for our pooches as they have more freedom to run around.

"Boasting a huge, largely flat beach area stretching four miles as well as forest areas, Holkham really is the best of both worlds for your dog.

"If you’re keen to extend your walk, Holkham Hall welcomes dogs into the grounds and has a dog-friendly café too."

The ranking was created to show the importance of people walking their dogs despite the cold weather.

PDSA hopes sharing a list of the best walks will encourage owners to get out and about.

Shauna Walsh, a PDSA vet nurse, said: "Going for a long country walk is one of the greatest joys of having a dog.

Holkham's dog-friendliness has been recognised on multiple occasions in the past.

Dogs are welcome on Holkham beach all year round but from April 1 to August 31 each year they must be on leads in areas with vulnerable wildlife.

Visitors are asked to respect any cordons in place to protect certain habitats.
