It is what some may describe as a typical market town.

But for former prime minister Liz Truss, Swaffham is the centre of the universe.

The South West Norfolk MP made the comment in a visit to mark the recent expansion of Norfolk transport firm GE-BE in the town, which has invested £5m into a new distribution centre.

Managing director of GE-BE, Carl Green showed Ms Truss around the new facility, which opened in June and is currently looking to recruit local people for a range of roles.

As they strolled through the warehouse, Mr Green was keen to highlight the challenges he faces with high taxes on petrol - the company spends £44,000 a week on fuel.

Mr Green said the company chose the site in Swaffham due to the close proximity to the A47, to which Ms Truss said: "We really need to get that road upgraded."
