A retired couple have been left homeless after flooding from Storm Babet submerged their home under almost a metre of water.

Barry Herber, of Norwich Road, Attleborough, was forced to wade across his front driveway in flood water up to his hips.

A classic car collector, he has lived at his bungalow with his wife for 52 years, and this is the first-time storm flooding has damaged their home.

He said: “It’s absolutely devastating.

“I had to rescue my wife and our two dogs. The water was so deep that the dogs were swimming in it and screaming.

“Our whole home is ruined. The engines in my cars are ruined.

“We won’t be able to go back into our home for at least six months now. We are homeless.”

Mr Herber said they were able to stay with their son overnight after they initially sought refuge at the Town Hall where they had a cup of tea and were given advice.

Meanwhile, in nearby Mill Lane, the road remained closed while a huge clean-up operation took place.

Dozens of people and volunteers were seen armed with wheelbarrows walking up and down the street, disposing of reams of sodden carpet into large skips.

Councillor Talia Taylor, who is Attleborough Town Council’s emergency planning coordinator, confirmed that five families from the town had to be housed in emergency accommodation.

She added: “It’s been absolutely devastating, but Attleborough is one of those communities that really pulls together whether someone has been directly impacted or not.”
