A problem pipe continues to spew sewage into a river tourist spot near Norwich due to legal delays over who will pay for it.

For several years foul water has been leaching into the River Yare from the former Hearts Cruisers site at Thorpe Island.

It has left locals frustrated at the lack of action amid fears someone could get seriously ill if it is not fixed soon.

Ian Mackie, county councillor for Thorpe St Andrew who has been leading the campaign to fix the issue said: “I am very keen to see a swift resolution to this ongoing problem.

“This part of the river is much loved and is used by many families and water users.

“Not having it resolved means it continues to pose a significant public health risk and I hope it will be sorted very soon.”

Divers investigated the contaminated waters in February and identified the problem as being caused by insufficient drainage from the island to the main sewer.

It is the landowner of the former Hearts Cruisers site's responsibility to fix it, but they have refused to do the work or pay for it to be done.

Broadland Council has said it will carry out the project and then charge it back to the landowner through using legal powers but the authority has said this will require a "significant amount" of preparatory work.

A spokesman said: "We are making good progress and have appointed a contractor to undertake the work meaning we will be able to proceed quickly once the required preparatory work has been completed."

Duncan Sears, who has lived in Thorpe for 40 years, fears the issue has been put on the back burner.

He said: “It is an issue lots of locals are concerned about.

“As it stands, people could get seriously ill when passing through on paddleboards or canoes.

“It has been going on for years and we need something done about it."
