A farm owner's hopes to build a bungalow to house a 24/7 worker to look after pigs has been blocked by council officials.

Geoff Perry, whose family has run farming businesses in the Great Yarmouth area since the 1800s, hoped to expand his herd of large black pigs at Dole Lane Farm in Bradwell.

According to planning documents, the construction of a worker's bungalow would have allowed for someone to live directly on the site in order to tend to the rare breed day and night.

The three-bed home was described as "modest" in size and would have been situated close to the livestock at the small-scale business, which Mr Perry has run since 2008.

But Great Yarmouth Council officials decided that the application failed to show a worker needed to live on-site 24/7 and that there wasn't suitable accommodation available nearby.

A local also objected to the plan, worrying the farm's expansion could cause more water pollution through agricultural run-off.

The application was refused.
