The new parliamentary seat straddling the Norfolk and Suffolk border has been named as one of the four top targets of the Green Party for the next general election.

And the party is hoping former Norwich city councillor Adrian Ramsay will lead them to success in the newly created constituency.

The new seat was created by the Boundary Commission in its latest review. It includes parts of south Norfolk including Diss and Harleston, along with communities in north Suffolk, including Bungay, Halesworth and Eye.

And, speaking at the Green Party conference, Mr Ramsay, who co-leads the party with Carla Denyer, set out his party's plan to quadruple the number of Greens in Parliament at the next election.

He said the seat he is aiming to win in Waveney Valley, along with Bristol Central, North Herefordshire and Brighton Pavilion are his party's four target seats.

Caroline Lucas is currently the only Green MP although she will not seek re-election for Brighton Pavilion.

Mr Ramsay, addressing his party's conference in Brighton, said: “With a general election coming up next year we have an opportunity like never before to make a real difference, to elect four MPs who will lead the way for the other parties to follow.

“Because we know that we can do better than this.”

Norwich-born Mr Ramsay is a former leader of the opposition Green group at Norwich City Council.

The University of East Anglia graduate became a city councillor at the age of 21.

He represented Henderson ward and Nelson ward during his City Hall stint between 2003 and 2011.

The Greens have been buoyed by recent election results in Norfolk and Suffolk. The Greens lead Mid Suffolk and East Suffolk councils, while Catherine Rowett recently won a Norfolk County Council by-election in West Depwade, within the new constituency.

While Mr Ramsay was selected as the Green's prospective parliamentary candidate for Waveney Valley back in December, other parties have yet to confirm who will stand for them.

The Conservatives are working through a shortlist of nine, including Norfolk county councillor Lana Hempsall and Simon Jones, chairman of the Norwich Conservative Association.
