The chippy next to Wells' picturesque quay is a family-owned business with more than 90 years of history.

Earlier this year French's was included in a list compiled by Fry Magazine of the UK's 50 best fish and chip shops.

Andrew Crook, the organiser of the awards, said: "The calibre of entries for the National Fish and Chip Awards this year has been nothing short of fantastic and we are proud of all the eateries that clearly put in vast amounts of effort to be considered for the accolade."

The National Fish and Chip Awards, now in its 36th year, aims to champion businesses that "make outstanding contributions to food service to ensure the nation enjoys its fish and chips" and those with excellent customer service.

The winner will be announced at an awards ceremony in London next year.
