Plans for new homes in a village near Norwich have been rejected after furious locals claimed they would pose a threat to their quality of life.

Phakorn Limited was hoping to divide a piece of residential land west of Spur Road, in Barnham Broom, in order to build a pair of semi-detached houses.

The two-storey properties would have consisted of three bedrooms but the plans were rejected by South Norfolk Council after locals raised concerns about additional pressure on the sewage system and the threat posed to wildlife.

"The addition of two new properties would only worsen the existing [sewage] problem and create unpleasant odours and potential health hazards for residents," one neighbour wrote in a letter to the authority's planning committee.

"We also moved to this area to escape the noise and fumes of city traffic.

"The [homes] would increase traffic and construction would damage the local environment."

Another homeowner added: "The development threatens our wildlife.

"Increased housing on this rural edge of the village will impact on our declining owl, bat and kestrel populations."

Barnham Broom Parish Council also submitted an objection to the proposals.
