Danomeys, a world food diner and cafe in Norwich has been named winner of the Best Coffee Shop/Cafe Award, sponsored by Castlemeadow Care, at the Norfolk Food & Drink Awards 2023.

Danomeys is a family-run business that opened three years ago as a resident kitchen at The Stanley, Norwich.

The business now has its own premises on Magdalen Road and has created a world food diner, paying homage to ethnic and street food culture from London and around the world through its food, drink, interior and even the music that is played.

The judges praised the attention to detail on every component of every dish. “The quality of the ingredients is clear in every bite,” they said.

“Not only does it taste great, it looks divine too, even using the best olive oil and making their own jam.”

They also commended the fact that the owners go to London, often in the middle of the night, to get produce fresh at a good price to be competitive.

When asked what it means to the business to win, owners Georgina Earland and Naomi Miller Howard said: “Words can’t even describe! It means so much to us.

“As we’ve only been open in our own space since April, to be recognised so early on is mind blowing. It’s great to hear that all of our hard work is paying off and it gives us the confidence and even more drive to continue what we’re doing and to push the coffee shop/cafe boundaries a little more.”

Finalist: The Old Store, Snettisham

The Old Store is a coffee shop and micro bakery in the village of Snettisham.

Opened at the beginning of 2022, the concept was born from the love of all things bread – especially sourdough.

The judges were impressed with the in-house bakery, where the team makes breads, cakes and pastries.

The food is served alongside speciality coffee, smoothies, fresh juices and cocktails.

“There was a lovely large menu for breakfast and lunch, with local coffee roasters and Norfolk tea,” said the judges. “The food and presentation was very impressive.”

Finalist: Heydon Village Tea Room

Heydon Village Tea Room was a dream for owner Cindy Hall’s late Nan, brought to reality 12 years ago.

The team of 15 take great pride in making everything with love on site and the tea room was the proud winner of Best Afternoon Tea at the Norfolk Food and Drink Awards in 2017 and was a finalist for Best Coffee Shop/Café in 2018.

The judges commented on how the tea room is popular with cyclists, walkers and dog owners. They also praised the service.

“The quality of the food was delicious, well-presented and well-portioned, with attention to detail appreciated,” said the judges. “The afternoon teas were looked at enviously on other tables.”
