A man jailed for 14 years for historical child sex offences has lost an appeal to clear his name.

Matthew Payne, 52, of Cromer Road in Norwich, was found guilty of two counts of rape, five counts of indecent assault and one count of indecency with a child.

He was sentenced in November last year to a total of 15 years, 14 to be served in prison and one year on extended licence.

He was also made subject of an indefinite sexual harm prevention order.

But in an application to the Court of Appeal he sought to overturn his conviction for the offences that took place from the mid-1990s to the early 2000s.

However in a judgement a panel of three judges refused the application.

His trial had heard the abuse began when the victim was eight years old and continued until she was 12, occurring on numerous occasions and including rape.

The victim, now aged in her 30s, came forward to contact police in 2019.

At the time of his conviction investigating officer DC Antonio Perretta said: “This is a crime which has a huge impact on the victim and their life.”
