Councillors will work closely with businesses in Gorleston following the announced closure of its Wilko store.

The High Street branch of the doomed national retailer announced its closure date for Thursday, September 21.

On Monday, fears were raised about the future of the once-thriving retail area, which saw the closure of its Barclay's branch at the end of last year, and the upcoming closure of the town's Boots.

Daniel Candon, Great Yarmouth Borough Council's portfolio-holder for economic development and growth, said the council will be working to support businesses in the area.

“It’s very sad news to hear that the Gorleston Wilko store could not be saved by a buyer," said Mr Candon.

"We must not forget this concerns people's livelihoods.

"The council has already been working behind the scenes in preparation for any announcement on this store and the pending closure of Boots, so we will be liaising and working closely with local businesses on the high street who may be worried during this time.

"This work will continue to go on.”
