Prime minister Rishi Sunak posed for selfies with a Norfolk family during a visit to the county this morning.

Mr Sunak was visiting as part of a government announcement to end a stalemate which has prevented decisions over new homes, including thousands in Norfolk.

The PM and housing secretary Michael Gove visited Taylor Wimpey's Heather Gardens housing development in Hethersett, near Norwich.

Mr Sunak was shown around some of the newly built homes and posed for selfies with people living in the homes.

Mr Sunak was forced to defend his government's green credentials, as environmental campaigners criticised the scrapping of nutrient neutrality rules, aimed at limiting nitrogen and phosphorus in waterways.

Those rules have prevented thousands of homes in Norfolk from being built, but critics have said ditching them will harm the environment.

Mr Sunak said: "Today’s announcement will unlock 100,000 new homes in communities where people want those homes to be built.

"That’s fantastic for young, first-time buyers.

"Also, it will provide an £18bn boost to our economy and support tens of thousands of jobs.

"We’re able to do this because previously it was a disproportionate and poorly targeted old EU ruling that blocked these homes.

"Thankfully we can now reverse that, and alongside that we are investing hundreds of millions of pounds to continue protecting and enhancing our precious natural environment."
