Students and staff at a West Norfolk school are celebrating its best-ever GCSE results.

Some 67pc of students at Smithdon High School, in Hunstanton, achieved a 4+ in English and maths, while 38pc scored strong passes.

The results were a 10pc improvement on the benchmark 2019, pre-Covid grades.

Headteacher Amanda Gibbins said: "We're really pleased with the results, which reflect the progress we're making as a school moving forwards and the hard work the students have put in."

One of the first in the queue to collect her envelope was Gracie Ashley, from Heacham.

"I'm so pleased, I got a 9 in drama," said Gracie, who is off to Springwood High School Sixth Form to study drama, English literature and psychology.

Maisie Haskins, who collected her grades with her dad Tristan and mum Louise, said: "I did it, I've passed everything."

She now plans to join a paramedic course at the College of West Anglia.

Finlay Colston is also heading to the college to start an apprenticeship with electrical contractors AM Blatch.

Shelby Bushnall, who achieved an 8 in maths and eight passes at grades 4 - 6, is off to King Edward VII School to take A Levels in maths, physics and product design.

At Springwood High School in King's Lynn, some 39pc of students achieved a 5 or higher in English and Maths and 11pc per gained a 7 or higher in those subjects – an increase of 5pc on 2019’s levels.

Headteacher Andy Johnson said: "I am so proud of these young people. Following a tough time during the pandemic, they worked hard to achieve their potential."

St Clement's High School at Terrington, near King's Lynn, saw an increasing number of students receive grade 7 and above in English and Maths, while exam results overall remained at pre-pandemic levels.

Headteacher Nigel Willingham said: "At St Clement’s, our results remain above pre-pandemic levels. In fact, the proportion of students achieving top grades across all subjects is actually higher than last year."

At Marshland High School at West Walton, near Wisbech, some 65pc achieved a grade 4 or above in English and Maths.

Headteacher Craig Jansen said: "This year’s results are the best the school has achieved and, amazingly, break last year’s record results, dispute a fall nationally in GCSE outcomes."

At King Edward VII Academy in King's Lynn, 60pc achieved grade 4 - 9 in English and maths, up from 56pc in 2022 and 48pc in 2019.

Principal Sarah Hartshorn said: "I am so proud of our students. In a year when nationally we are seeing results move in line with pre-pandemic figures, KES continues to see results rise."   

King’s Lynn Academy did not release overall results.

Principal Alan Fletcher said: “We are absolutely delighted for KLA pupils’ success this year – we all understand just how difficult the last years have been for students in this year group following the extreme disruption to their education caused by the pandemic, and it is great to see our students being rewarded for their hard work and for the resilience that they have had to show."
