It also scored highly for its 'excellent' rating on Tripadvisor, giving it four and a half stars out of five for its visitor rating.

A spokeswoman for Sixt, which compiled the data, said: "Cromer's Victorian influence has proven popular with tourists, with many buildings dating back hundreds of years, along with a pier where you’ll find visitors sea angling for cod and sea brass."

Cromer is also one of the beaches in Norfolk to have blue flag status for its water quality.

Mablethorpe in Lincolnshire took the top spot with Whitley Bay in Tyneside and Shanklin in the Isle of Wight also ranking highly.
