The chairman of a Norfolk parish council has offered thoughts and sympathies to the family of the woman who was killed in a fatal crash on the A143, which involved a suspected stolen vehicle that was being pursued by police. 

A woman who was travelling in a Nissan Juke died following a crash with a Land Rover Defender on the A143 near the Old Harleston Road junction close to Earsham shortly after 4.30pm on Sunday August 13.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which was near Bungay.

At the time of the collision police officers investigating the suspected theft of a vehicle from Suffolk had been pursuing the Land Rover.

The incident has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) by Norfolk and Suffolk Constabularies.

Richard Randlesome, chairman of Earsham Parish Council, said he saw a police helicopter flying over the nearby marshes for around an hour on Sunday afternoon.

"We knew something was going on, but we didn't know what," Mr Randlesome said.

"The thoughts and sympathy from the village and the parish council are with the family of the poor woman who was an innocent victim."

The two occupants of the Land Rover, men in their 20s and 40s, have been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. 

Both have received treatment for injuries sustained in the collision in hospital.

Norfolk County Councillor Barry Stone said the council will also investigate the incident and address any safety issues at the stretch of road should any be found.
