The proposed installation of a 23-metre tall antenna mast in a coastal community has been met with a mixed reaction from locals.

Great Yarmouth Borough Council has given notice that FreshWave, a wireless infrastructure developer, plans to install a 23.14m monopole in Haven Holiday Park in Ormesby Road, Caister.

To be located in the central area of the holiday park, the 5G antenna's construction intends to maximise coverage across the caravan park and improve service in residential and commercial areas peripheral to the Haven site.

Members of the public are encouraged to view copies of the application and put forward comments before it moves forward on August 31.

According to the applicants, consultation with Caister Academy, Caister Primary Federation and John Grant School - which are all within a 500m radius of the proposed site - was carried out on May 12 and has not yet received a response.

Local reception to the proposal has so far been mixed, with some welcoming the improvement of cellular quality with others condemning the "eye sore" a new antenna would make.

One person said on Facebook: "There is already a huge telephone mast in Caister, why the need for another in a new location?"

Another said: "Good, we need higher-speed communications in this area."

Other objections drew attention to the mast's height which many feel would not be in keeping with the mostly ground-level static caravan site, comparing its overall height (73.8 feet) to a seven-storey building.

Reasoning the location, FreshWave said: "The location is close to the optimal location for radio propagation and has the least visual impact on neighbouring residential property, but is unfortunately unavailable."

Despite the likelihood of overshadowing neighbouring homes, the park is not an environmentally sensitive location or within an identified protected habitat, nor is it within close proximity to any listed buildings.

The antenna would see the 5G service rolled out across Caister.
