King Charles III is keeping a Royal tradition in the air by becoming the honorary head of a Norfolk airbase.

Buckingham Palace said the monarch would become the Royal Honorary Air Commodore at RAF Marham along with a clutch of other military appointments.

They include becoming Sponsor of HMS Queen Elizabeth - the aircraft carrier on which Marham's F-35 Lightning stealth fighters are deployed.

Further appointments have been announced for the Queen, Prince and Princess of Wales, Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh and the Princess Royal.

The palace said in a statement: "The new appointments will continue to reflect the close relationship between the armed forces and the Royal Family in His Majesty’s reign.

"The King, as sovereign, is head of the armed forces. His Majesty is a military veteran himself, having trained and served in both the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force."

The King's ceremonial role at Marham was previously performed by the late Queen Elizabeth II.

She was a frequent visitor to the base, which is 20 miles from Sandringham.

Queen Camilla has been made patron of the Royal Army Chaplains’ Department.

The palace statement added her other military affiliations included Colonel-in-Chief of the Royal Lancers, Colonel of the Grenadier Guards and Colonel-in-Chief of the Rifles.

The Prince of Wales becomes Colonel-in-Chief of the Mercian Regiment, Colonel-in-Chief of the Army Air Corps and Royal Honorary Air Commodore of RAF Valley.

Buckingham Palace said: "The Prince of Wales has a strong affiliation with the armed forces, having served in the Army as a platoon commander in the Blues and Royals, before completing flying training in the Royal Air Force.

"His Royal Highness served as an RAF search and rescue pilot, spending three years at RAF Valley in Anglesey, Wales."

The Princess of Wales becomes Commodore-in-Chief of the Fleet Air Arm, Colonel-in-Chief of the 1st Queen’s Dragoon Guards and Royal Honorary Air Commodore of RAF Coningsby.
