From making a splash in a canoe race to live music, dancing and pirates walking the plank – fun was had by all at Cley Harbour Day.

The fundraiser for Cley Harbour on Tuesday (August 1) got underway with songs from the Wild Rovers Shantymen before slapstick comedy from Punch and Judy and live music from Pirate Joe and The Foreign Locals, which had people up on their feet dancing.

It was followed by a canoe race up the river and a best-dressed pirate competition – with the winner making one unlucky landlubber walk the plank.

Simon Read, Cley Harbour’s chairman, said: “It was a day of good family fun.

“The canoe race was a neck-and-neck mad dash up the river in three-to-a-boat Canadian canoes. One boat tipped over and others came close.

“We wanted there to be something for everyone.”

After years of planning and fundraising, a 500-metre stretch of the waterway at Cley Harbour was de-silted and re-profiled in 2022, making it wider to allow more boats to enter the harbour.

The money raised at the event will go toward future projects at the harbour.
