A carer has been charged with stealing more than £63,000 from a client with severe learning difficulties.

The victim has been in a residential home since the age of seven and was unaware of the alleged theft until his mother discovered it, Norwich Magistrates Court heard.

Former support worker Matthew Hamilton, 40, of Cromer Road in Mundesley, pleaded not guilty to theft of £63,083 between January 2021 and August 2022.

He is alleged to have obtained a debit card which he used over an extended period to withdraw cash from the victim’s account, the court was told.

Prosecutor James Quelch said: “The money was put aside in the account to pay for his care.

“The victim was unable to know what was happening but his mother had detailed the impact of this in a statement.”

He said the breach of trust and the targeting of a vulnerable victim meant the allegations were too serious to be dealt with at magistrates court.

Magistrates declined jurisdiction and committed the case to be heard at Norwich Crown Court on August 25.
