It’s an image that has become synonymous with American life.

But a yellow school bus named Hilda has swapped the shores of Lake Ontario north of New York for the country lanes of north Norfolk.

Gutted from the inside and lovingly put back together, she has become the travelling home of couple Alex Woosey, 24, and Harriet Woodhouse, 31.

And now, Hilda the American School Bus, is opening her doors to give others the chance to experience the adventure.

Until 2019, the bus carried out the daily school run for South Jefferson Central Junior School. Then, in 2020 during the pandemic, Mr Woosey decided to take a leap into the unknown and bought it.

“I found her in an online inventory and decided to use all my savings to import and rescue her to give her a new life as a skoolie," he said.

“A skoolie is a school bus that has been retired from its school district and then gutted and refitted as a tiny home on wheels

“I originally scheduled a six-month time frame to complete my tiny home on wheels. While a student at Norwich University of Arts, I embarked on my dream of a solo skoolie conversion.”

He met Ms Woodhouse in January 2022, and together they completed the project.

Most of the materials are reclaimed and thrifted. Arguably, one of the most impressive areas inside Hilda is the luxury indoor bathroom with rainfall shower and bath.

He added: “Together, with the support of our local community, family and friends, we have been working to hand-convert our beloved school bus into a luxury cabin-inspired off-grid glamping unit with a twist.

“And now, after three years, she is finally finished, we are so excited to share her with you.”

Hilda is now being let out as 'pop-up accommodation' for glamping excursions in north Norfolk. Bookings are in partnership with Gresham Hall Glamping and Quirky Campers.

He added: “We really hope you love and enjoy Hilda as much as we do, and you can make memories with us that you can cherish forever.”
