A glass of Baileys a day is the secret to a long life – at least that has been the case for a centenarian from Norwich.

Madge Baldock, of Mary Chapman Care Home in Thorpe St Andrew, celebrated her 100th birthday with several of her loved ones, including relatives flying in from Canada.

Pupils from a local primary school also paid her a visit at her birthday party and brought with them a handmade card.

And that wasn’t the only one she received.

A special card from King Charles landed on the doorstep on the morning of her big day on Wednesday, June 28.

Her daughter, Jennifer Belding, said: “My brother, Micheal, and niece, Katie, came over specially from Canada to surprise her.

“There were also about 40 people, made up of our family and friends, who she knew nothing about them coming.”

Mrs Belding revealed that her mother had been "very lucky in life” without suffering from many illnesses or visits to hospital.

Born in Great Yarmouth in 1923, she worked alongside her sister at Grout's silk factory in the town. Originally making silk knickers, the pair soon began making parachutes for the war effort.

She had married her husband Bernard shortly before the start of the Second World War. Together they had two children.

Mr Baldock died 20 years ago and, following his death, Mrs Baldock moved from Acle to Mary Chapman Care Home.

Mrs Belding added: “The family are all aware of her liking to Baileys, and we have attributed her long life to the several glasses of this daily.”
