Another north Norfolk bank branch is set to close later this year.

Barclays has announced its branch in Station Road, Hoveton will close on December 1 due to fewer people using its face-to-face banking service.

It follows a wave of branch closures across north Norfolk, which has seen Lloyds pull out of North Walsham and Cromer – leaving both towns with just one branch each.

Barclays said a shift towards online and mobile banking amongst customers was the reason behind the Hoveton branch closure.

The bank said just 11 people currently use the branch regularly as their only way to do their banking - with 80pc of the branch’s customers banking using the Barclays app, online, and by phone in 2021.

According to the bank, 29pc of customers at the branch have used nearby branches in the last 12 months.

Duncan Baker, MP for North Norfolk, said he is “furious” with the bank's decision to close the branch.

“The big banks care not a jot for our rural communities, with no social responsibility,” he said.

“Whilst banking can be done at the local Post Office and online, we have many older residents who simply rely on the bank and cannot go digital or travel miles to another branch.

“What makes this decision even more ludicrous are the busy tourist influxes Hoveton sees every single year.

“I will fight to see services retained for the community, with ensuring there is a cash provision being my top priority."

The banking giant said it would provide some face-to-face customer contact through a service known as 'Barclays Local', but details about how or where this would operate in Norfolk are yet to be revealed.

The Lloyds Cromer branch is set to close on October 25 this year.

The bank's North Walsham branch will close on May 29 next year.
