A man who has been missing after his boat capsized on a remote stretch of the Broads has been named. 

The man was with four other people in a small vessel which began to sink on the River Waveney, between Beccles and Oulton Broad on Monday evening. 

All five ended up in the water, but four were able to get to safety.

The man who is now being treated as a missing person has been named locally as Nathan Strowger.

Police and the coastguard were called to the waterway close to Aldeby, in Norfolk, and Barnby, in Suffolk, at about 9.40pm on Monday. 

They conducted a search alongside the coastguard helicopter of the water and the riverbank. 

The search lasted for several hours, before it was scaled down at 4am. 

A Maritime and Coastguard Agency spokeswoman said: “At approx. 9.40pm on July 10, HM Coastguard received a 999 call from a member of the public reporting a sinking vessel on the River Waveney, north of Barnby, with five people on board.

“Lowestoft and Gorleston Coastguard Rescue Teams, Hemsby Broads Rescue, the Coastguard Helicopter from Lydd, East of England Ambulance Service, Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service, Suffolk Police and Helimed85 were immediately sent to assist.

“Four people were able to self-recover from the water, with a search taking place for one outstanding person overnight – this has now concluded.

“HM Coastguard continues to support emergency service partners.”

A Suffolk police spokesman said: "Four people self-recovered from the water, but one man was unaccounted for. Suffolk Police have been supporting a search of the river - led by HM Coastguard - which has now concluded for the time being, with the missing person not located.

“Police officers are continuing with a number of enquiries in respect of the missing man and will continue to liaise with HM Coastguard and other partners.”

The man's relatives have been informed.
