A Norfolk pub has refurbished its kitchen following a scathing one-star food hygiene rating.

The Artichoke in Broome, which was voted by EDP readers as offering the second-best roast dinner in the county, was inspected on March 24, 2023.

The overall rating by the inspectors was 'major improvement necessary' - one out of five.

Specifically, the report rated 'hygienic food handling' and the 'cleanliness and condition of facilities and buildings' as an 'improvement necessary'.

While the 'management of food safety' category was graded as a 'major improvement necessary'.

A South Norfolk Council spokesperson said: "We are working with the business to help them make the changes required to improve their rating."

The overall rating, which was released two weeks ago, resulted in inflammatory comments about the pub on Facebook.

Its landlord, who declined to comment on the rating, said measures have been taken to refurbish and improve the kitchen, and a re-evaluation of the rating had been scheduled with the council.

In 2009 the pub was voted the CAMRA Norfolk Pub of the Year and provides vegan and gluten-free offerings with its food too.
