Plans for a campsite next to an ancient Roman road have been withdrawn over fears it would lead to the tiny community being "entirely overrun" in the summer months.

A developer named in council papers as T Wright applied for planning permission to create a 25-pitch site alongside Peddars Way, at the junction of the main A149 and Beach Road at Holme, near Hunstanton.

But Holme Parish Council objected, because of the high number of holiday homes already present in the village.

"With regard to impact on the local community it is already the case that on its existing five camping and caravan sites Holme has more units of holiday accommodation than principal residences," it said.

"This level of provision is already disproportionate to the size of the village and given that second homes and holiday lets account for around 60pc of Holme’s housing stock the community cannot absorb any further holiday accommodation without being entirely overrun in the summer months."

It adds if given the go-ahead, the campsite would result in the loss of eight acres of good agricultural land on which food could be grown.

The Campaign for the Preservation of Rural England (CPRE) also objected.

It said: "Whilst this application would enhance services and facilities for visitors, this is outweighed by the harmful impacts on the local character of this part of the area of outstanding natural beauty.

"The views from it to the coast to the north, and from the Open Coastal Marshes southwards would be harmed by these highly visible and incongruous additions."

It comes after plans for a new house on nearby Thornham Road were turned down because of their impact on the AONB.

Norfolk Wildlife Trust said additional campsite facilities close to Holme Dunes National Nature Reserve were not sustainable.

Some 55 comments were received in favour of the campsite and 15 objections.

West Norfolk Council's planning portal says the application has now been withdrawn.
