It has never before pulled passenger trains - until now.

A General Motors locomotive with the number 66424 is about to take a leading role at this weekend's 'Rails and Ales' gala on the North Norfolk Railway.

The Class 66 engine, called the Driver Paul Scrivens, will be one of 10 in action at the event, which turns the heritage line between Sheringham and Holt into a beer festival

Commercial manager, Graham Hukins, said: “We are very grateful to DRS (Direct Rail Services) for making 66424 available for the event – we believe this will be the first time the engine has ever hauled passenger trains so it is a unique opportunity for enthusiasts, local residents and holidaymakers alike."

The locomotive was built in North America in 2007 and shipped across the Atlantic for use on heavy intermodal freight trains, including ferrying supplies for Tesco.

It has also worked flask trains from nuclear power stations to the Sellafield reprocessing facility and rarely appears in East Anglia.

The gala runs on 9, 10 and 11 June.
