Work on a multi-million-pound revamp of a busy road in and out of the city is to begin next month.

The plans for Dereham Road - between Longwater Lane and Gurney Road - include new bus lanes, wider pavements and new crossings.

After getting the green light in January, work is now imminent in the Bowthorpe and Costessey area during the summer holidays, with the speed limit set to be cut from 40mph to 30mph between Longwater Lane and Norwich Road.

A Norfolk County Council spokesman said: "The construction of the Dereham Road scheme is scheduled to begin towards the end of July to coincide with the school holidays.

"This will begin around the Richmond Road area.

"We will write to residents nearer the time with information on the detail and duration of the work.

"The nearby Mayfly Way project is also set to begin work towards the beginning of July."

Concerns have been raised around the 24-hour bus lanes being introduced for fear of the added congestion it could bring.

District councillor, Gary Blundell, said: "Bus lanes are important but it seems like a waste having a 24-hour one.

"I feel like there's little incentive because other vehicles like motorbikes or electric vehicles won't be able to use it."
