The Large Business of the Year award at the EDP Business Awards 2023 will go to a local firm that is achieving excellence across all areas. Here, category judge Joanne Price, a director at FRP Advisory, shares her advice for businesses that are considering entering.

Can you tell us a bit about your business journey?

After graduating from university, I started my career at a big four accountancy firm here in Norfolk. I moved to FRP Advisory in 2020 as an associate director in corporate finance, following the acquisition of the JDC Group.

Why were you keen to get involved in the Business Awards?

I am very proud of my roots in Norfolk and I have always been passionate about helping local businesses to achieve their goals. These awards provide an opportunity to promote the great individuals and businesses in our county.

What do you bring to the judging process?

I have worked with a wide range of businesses across the UK, across all sectors and sizes – some amazing organisations which I have helped grow through new ownership or acquisitions, and unfortunately some businesses who have not succeeded. This has not only provided me with an insight into what helps make a business successful, but also the pitfalls to avoid.

What have your previous experiences of judging been like?

I’ve been a judge for the Business Awards for a number of years now and have
met some amazing businesses and business leaders – it just shows what a great region we live in.

What will you be looking for in the winner?

I don’t want to just hear about revenue growth or profit growth, I want to hear about specific strategies which have driven business growth; how the business has had to manage any change; and how it has developed the infrastructure and grown its workforce to support future growth.

What advice would you give to a business that’s considering entering?

Don’t hold back. Have confidence in your achievements and don’t be afraid to shout about your successes!

Entering awards can also be good for business, from increasing credibility and profile raising, to attracting talent and motivating employees.
