The Environmental and Sustainability Award at the EDP Business Awards will go to a firm that is working towards a greener economy. Roger Smith, group SHEQ (safety, health, environment and quality) director at Norse Group, explains what he will be looking for as a judge.

Why were you keen to get involved in the Business Awards?

I recognise the hard work and dedication of businesses within Norfolk and their contribution to making a change within environmental, sustainability and social governance. Companies and business leaders can make a meaningful change, and being part of that is a passion I also share.

Have you ever been judged for an award yourself?

In 2009, I was a finalist for the Sustainably Award at the European Energy Summit in Brussels.

Will you use that experience when judging this award?

As a finalist in an award process, I understand the innovation needed for a business to implement sustainability and environmental governance.

I appreciate the importance of staff contribution across an organisation and those who must commit and deliver a positive outcome.

What have your previous experiences of judging been like?

I have judged several events in various roles across different organisations. With experience as a judge, I understand what’s required to be at the top of your field and what it takes to set yourself apart from other businesses.

What inspires you in business?

It is the inspiration from the team within an organisation and the drive to do something well. An individual can make a difference and be part of something that benefits everyone. Innovative thinking from one person can then help not just the business but the communities it serves.

What will you be looking for in the winner?

I am looking for a business that understands and demonstrates the importance of committing to environmental sustainability and social governance. It is vital organisations show a reaction to the severity of the global climate emergency.

In addition, I feel businesses should demonstrate how their innovations mitigate the direct and indirect impact their interaction has on the environment.

What advice would you give to a business that’s considering entering?

Be honest and open, giving a transparent baseline of your impact, as it is the only way to address your impact on the environment. Own what you do and be proud of the commitment to showcasing how your business is sustainable by considering social, environmental and economic factors.

The deadline for entries to the EDP Business Awards 2023 is July 16. To enter the Environmental and Sustainability Award category, please visit edpbusinessawards.co.uk
