A couple with decades of experience in hospitality has relocated to transform a city pub into the beating heart of the Golden Triangle. 

Wendy Rose and Joe Kelly, aged 42 and 44 respectively, have moved from Hackney in London to Norwich to run The York in Leicester Street. 

The building is owned by Stonegate and it temporarily closed earlier this year when the previous tenants left. 

The pair have previously run pubs, bars and supper clubs in the capital and Mr Kelly worked at The Eagle Farringdon - known as the UK's first gastropub.

While Mr Kelly is originally from Exeter, Miss Rose grew up in Sudbury in Suffolk so already knew East Anglia well.

She said: "We were searching for our own pub and we already had friends in Norwich.

"When we looked at The York last November we thought it had great potential. 

"We also have a two-year-old son called Arthur, so we were looking for a change in pace from London."

The pub reopened on Friday, May 5 and the changes include a mirror room in the snug area, fresh paint and wallpaper, new flooring and a petanque pitch for boules in the garden.

They are also planning to use the upstairs area for supper clubs and for party hire.

The new head chef Jack Grand serves a modern British menu, with mains such as cider-braised pork belly with wholegrain mustard mash and bavette steak and chips. 

The drinks include low-intervention wines, spritz in a range of flavours and local beers and ales.

Miss Rose added: "We wanted a menu that was all about fresh and seasonal produce, with Sunday roasts coming soon.

"The pub looks a bit grander now and the reaction so far has been really good." 

The York is open Wednesday and Thursday 4pm-11pm, Friday and Saturday 12noon-11pm and Sunday 12noon-9pm.
