Two commercial giants are planning to add new restaurants to a growing business park on the outskirts of the city.

Fast food powerhouse Burger King and multinational coffee chain Starbucks have submitted applications for the construction of two drive-through restaurants in Maple Way at Broadland Gate Trade Park, in Postwick.

There are concerns however over the amount of increased traffic and oversaturation of dining outlets the premises could bring.

The proposed 45,477sqft site would join the likes of McDonald's, Lidl, Gridserve and the recently announced Travis Perkins.

The application, which was submitted on April 19 to Broadland District Council, proposes "construction of two drive-through restaurants with parking and landscaping".

There are objections to the proposed plans, however, citing issues around increased traffic as the area is transformed alongside the building of hundreds of homes.

Eleanor Laming, Green Party district councillor for Brundall ward, said: "The proposed development will significantly increase traffic and pollution on the relevant section of Maple Way during hours of opening - approximately 18 hours a day - particularly as housing and commercial development planned for the surrounding area increases.

"I'm also concerned about the risk to walkers, cyclists and those with mobility vehicles who will use the access way from Yarmouth Road to Maple Way, which is already quite dangerous, to get to the restaurant facilities.

"In addition, the number of dining outlets on Broadland Business Park and Broadland Gate business parks is increasing.

"This can have the effect of taking customer business from local residents in the area away from Norwich city centre."

A total of 40 new full-time jobs would be available as well as 46 parking spaces, with four disability spaces and two motocycle spaces, would be built should the application go through.

Broadland District Council will make decisions on the plans at planning committee meetings later this year.
