A bus had to make an emergency stop in Norwich after its engine caught fire.

The First Bus service was travelling towards Castle Meadow when it was forced to stop at about 8am today (April 25).

Norfolk Fire Service crews from Carrow and Sprowston were sent to the scene and part of the road was blocked off while they attended the incident.

The fire was extinguished before their arrival and there was little damage sustained.

No passengers were injured in the incident.

Fire crews continued to monitor the situation for 40 minutes before returning back to base.

Chris Speed, operations director at First Eastern Counties, said: “One of our buses while travelling towards Castle Meadow this morning experienced a minor fire in the engine compartment.

"It was extinguished very quickly before any damage was sustained and no passengers were injured in the incident.

"The fire service attended the scene to monitor the situation for around 40 minutes and then departed with no further action required.”
