New plans have been revealed to build a 30-plot campsite and caravan park near an area known as the Trinity Broads.

The owners of a garden centre in Ormesby Saint Michael, near Great Yarmouth, have entered into discussions with the local council to convert the existing site into a permanent campsite.

They are seeking to diversify their business, as it struggles with competition from large scale growers elsewhere in East Anglia and abroad.

A planning statement says: "Broadland Nurseries occupies a site on the south side of Main Road, Ormesby St Michael and has been in single-family ownership since 1912.

"In recent years it has become increasingly difficult to compete with plants grown on an industrial scale, both in the Fens and from the Netherlands.

"Plant production and sales from the site have now declined to the extent that around 50pc of the site is vacant with no prospect of reuse for horticulture.

"As a consequence, a change of use of around half the site is sought from horticulture to a camping and caravan site.

According to the documents, the site would allow for 30 vehicle spaces on a total of 1.6 hectares and would see three persons employed.

It is expected the garden centre and nursery will remain open while works to build the new campsite are approved.

The site is close to Ormesby Broad, one of three - along with Filby and Rollesby - areas of water known collectively as the Trinity Broads.

They are not connected by navigable river to the rest of the Norfolk Broads waterways.
